The Houston Amtrak station is like no other in the United States. The walls inside the station are covered with railroad memorabilia and even though the outside of the station doesn't have the old look like the California stations, employees here in Houston are very helpful. In this day and time, the general public doesn't understand much about passenger train travel, as it's a mode of transportation, whose heyday was in the 1960's and back, but by the same token the Sunset Limited in a LUXURY HOTEL on wheels, offering sleeping car, lounge care and DINING CAR just like you see in the movies. You will not be disappointed traveling on the Amtrak trains, especially The SUNSET LIMITED which runs from New Orleans to Los Angeles, through Houston, Texas but keep in mind, this is a mode of transportation that was the only mode of transportation from 1880 through 1965. So don't expect to get there quickly. Buy your ticket, then step aboard, and relax to a past, but more enjoyable way to travel.
Old run down station. Difficult to find employees. Located in downtown Houston. Didnt really feel safe.
Next time someone wants me to pick them up at Amtrak from New Orleans to Houston Im just driving there. Every time 6,7,8 or 10 hours late. No wonder they have filed Bankruptcy several times.
I grew up in Houston and always go back to visit. There's plenty of places to visit, great colleges and a fun night life.
