Olivewood is Houston's first incorporated African-American cemetery. This cemetery is the final resting place for several individuals born in Africa that survived the Trans Atlantic Slave trade, veterans of WWI and WWII, and many prominent members of the 4th and Old 6th Ward. Recent flooding has caused major damage to some of the oldest parts of Olivewood, so saving this important part of Houston's history has become more important than ever.
Awesome Cemetery. Great history. Glad to see and hear its being cleaned up. My wife and I help clean up old neglected cemeteries up here in Kansas City, as well. Luckily I was able to run into a neighbor of the cemetery, as it is locked up (she gave me the code). Not sure if its locked all the time or if theres a back way in, so keep that in mind.
This historic place is full of amazing founders and beautiful scenery. The groundskeeper is dedicated and has many wonderful stories.
Incredible historic cemetery where many of Houston's first black settlers & freed slaves rest. Like many (or most) historical sites in Houston, Olivewood has not allows been treated with the respect it deserves. It's a huge disappointment. I know a lot of volunteer efforts have been made to change that which is nice to see. I posted a photo from one of my visits.
This was such a spiritual experience for me. I volunteered to clean with a few others. This is be a life long commitment. I owe this to my ancestors.
